RESPONSIBLE SOURCING
Responsible Sourcing Manual
AHFA’s Responsible Sourcing Manual (released January 2012) was developed for the express purpose of helping companies meet the social responsibility requirements of the Sustainable by Design program. Those requirements include developing policies that:
- Define your company’s commitment to human rights and internationally-recognized labor standards;
- Facilitate compliance with existing and emerging legal requirements related to social responsibility (including the Lacey Act and the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act);
- Identify the company’s potential impact on communities, manage any potential risk; and,
- Address the impact of the company’s products on health and/or safety.
The Responsible Sourcing Manual provides a step-by-step guide to establishing a comprehensive corporate social responsibility program, through which Sustainable by Design companies will meet all of the above requirements. The manual is free to participants in the Sustainable by Design program. It costs $49 for AHFA member companies that are not in Sustainable by Design and $249 for non-member companies.

2012 Country Risk Profiles
This members-only supplement to the Responsible Sourcing Manual highlights the growing need for corporate social responsibility programs – and specifically assists Sustainable by Design companies in meeting the last two social responsibility requirements listed above. The top five furniture-exporting countries – Mexico, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam – are profiled by UL Responsible Sourcing, a global leader in responsible sourcing programs and supplier assessment services. These country profiles can help Sustainable by Design companies assess potential supply chain risks and provide meaningful internal training for sourcing personnel. AHFA plans to commission additional country profiles and update these profiles as needed.
